Goole and District Mariners Association<\/strong><\/p>

We are most grateful to Goole and District Mariners Association (GDMA) who have kindly given this Society their blessing to publish a collection of historic images collated by them twenty plus years ago.<\/p>

The Association was formed in 1996 when a number of ex merchant seamen decided to form a charitable group. They agreed that their objectives would be to maintain a benevolent fund for the benefit of mariners and their families, and create and maintain a memorial to lost mariners. A very fine memorial was created at Lock Hill, Goole, overlooking the River Ouse, and the Association holds a remembrance service there each year.\u00a0<\/p>

GDMA members meet on the last Saturday of every month at The Charter Club, Pasture Road, Goole. New members will always be made very welcome.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Renowned waterways historian, the late Brian Masterman of Old Goole was a founder member of GDMA. He was present at their inaugural meeting which took place on 22 September, 1996. To raise funds for the Association’s charitable aims, it was later suggested creating sets of maritime themed postcards which could then be sold to maritime history enthusiasts. Given Brian’s extensive collection of historic images it would have been a natural choice to pick the theme Goole’s Maritime Past.\u00a0<\/em> We imagine that the challenge for Brian would have been to decide on which images to feature as there are so many in his collection from which to choose.\u00a0<\/p>

His friends remember that over a considerable period of time, two hundred images were selected, grouped into fifty sets each of four postcards. These were printed by Harry Broadley and Sons of Goole and sold in sets to the public. Brian used to have four cards done at a time to spread the costs. The last cards were printed in 2003.<\/p>

Source of the images<\/strong><\/p>

The images used in this gallery were produced by scanning the actual postcards found in the Brian Masterman Collection. Gaps in Brian’s set were filled by scanning cards from a private collection.\u00a0<\/p>

But where had Brian originally found the images used on his collection? That is not clear except for a small number of the images used by Brian. When they had been donated by his friends and acquaintances he had included those credits and we have replicated those accordingly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On the message side, each postcard holds Brian’s description of the image which we have reproduced with only minor alterations where appropriate. If additional information has become available that has been added to Brian’s narrative.<\/p>
